Achievements for Professor Anna Kim's paper on sustainable local development through entrepreneurship

Professor Anna Kim’s paper titled “Going viral or growing like an oak tree? Towards sustainable local development through entrepreneurship” co-authored with Suntae Kim (Johns Hopkins University) and published in the Academy of Management Journal won two awards at the 2023 Academy of Management Annual Meeting; the “ONE-SIM Outreach Award 2023” and the “ONE Best Paper in Entrepreneurship and Natural Environment Award 2023”, along with being named one of three Finalists for the Academy of Management Journal (AMJ) Best Article Award.

The first award by the Organizations and the Natural Environment (ONE) and Social Issues in Management (SIM) divisions of the Academy of Management (AOM), recognises the outreach activities based on their paper and stated, “The jury is impressed by how the authors translated nuanced and multilayered ethnographic findings about the most effective methods of incubating new businesses into actionable insights for the business community, policymakers and nonprofits, and the broader public”.

A bit more about the outreach activities that led to the first award: the authors published a piece for based on the findings from the same project. The ideas were also featured in , , , and . The idea of “scaling deep” in their research has been used by entrepreneurs and practitioners around the world, including Appalachia, New England, Hawaii, Ireland, and Calgary, and here’s one example from (see p.3).
