Abstract: For organizations, the process of knowledge creation lies at the intersection of internal processes and external interactions. For most of the current literature on knowledge sourcing within economic geography, these are assumed to be carried from a single unit considered as fixed in space. In a constantly growing number of organizations, however, the internal-external interface is multiplied as firms expand to embed themselves within different sites of knowledge production. This research empirically explores how organizations differentiate their technological development activities as a function of their geographical locations within the US and whether the complexity of their output is enhanced as a result.
