Senior Women Academic Administrators of Canada (SWAAC)聽

The Senior Women Academic Administrators of Canada organization was founded in 1987 to provide a forum and a collective voice for women in senior administrative ranks in Canadian universities, colleges and technical institutes.聽The primary purpose of SWAAC is the promotion of female leadership in Canadian universities, colleges and technical institutes through:

  • Developing and enhancing leadership skills
  • Mentoring future leaders
  • Recognizing exceptional leaders
  • Networking and communicating
  • Promoting equity, diversity and inclusion

SWAAC Graduate Student Award of Merit

$4,000 awarded annually to the women graduate students who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in the university or general community while maintaining exemplary academic records.

Women registered in a Master鈥檚 or PhD program

Nomination Process and Quota

ONE nomination package is to be submitted in one pdf file format by email to gradcomp.gps [at] mcgill.ca (subject: 2021%20SWAAC%20Nomination) . Incomplete nominations will not be considered.聽Please use the following file naming format: SWAAC 2025_Applicant last name-Level of award-academic unit name.聽

Evaluation Criteria

  • Outstanding academic performance
  • Evidence of leadership, including but not limited to such things as:

聽 聽 - executive positions in student organizations
聽 聽 - participation on committees (student committees and university committees)
聽 聽 - organization of special events, conferences, etc.
聽聽 - involvement in advocacy groups
聽 聽 - involvement in volunteer organizations, within the campus setting and/or in the general community.

Required documents

Complete nomination package must include the following in prescribed order:

  • biographical data - *biographical information usually includes information about former and current studies, areas of interest, research, publications, other awards, interests outside the university, and community or volunteer work. It's usually in a narrative form, about 1-2 pages in length, and is an opportunity for the nominee to tell the adjudication committee some things about herself, and to explain at greater length her background/interests/passions/ambitions/volunteer work

  • academic records聽(Official university transcripts)
  • three(3) letters of reference(sent directly to unit by referee)

SWAAC Student Award in Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

$4,000 awarded to a woman university or college student聽*聽who advances equity, diversity and inclusion within and/or outside their institution through outstanding dedication and excellence or community outreach and activism.聽

Women registered in a Master鈥檚 or PhD program and should demonstrate an exceptional commitment to and engagement with a particular issue of social justice, community, and/or community organization. 聽Such community activism can take place on or off campus.
