Launching the third edition of the Graham Sommer Competition!
The Schulich School of Music of ¿´Æ¬ÊÓƵ University is pleased to announce that applications are open for the third edition of the Graham Sommer Competition for Young Composers (GSC).
Interested Canadian composers under the age of 35 (born after August 15, 1989), are invited to submit three original works (each 3-15 minutes long) by August 15, 2024, at 12:00 PM (noon) EST.
Established in 2017, the GSC encourages the creation of new Canadian chamber music by up-and-coming composers. The competition promotes the creation of works for chamber music formations including piano that can engage a wide audience and become part of the standard repertoire.
The key dates leading up to the competition final round gala concert are:
- Application deadline: August 15, 2024
- Finalists announced: Week of October 7, 2024
- Finalists submit commissioned works: March 16, 2025
- Competition final round & gala concert: May 18, 2025
For the 2025 edition, finalists must compose an original work for a 6-person mixed chamber ensemble (C flute, B-flat clarinet, violin, cello, piano, and vibraphone). The GSC has engaged to premiere the finalists’ works in the gala concert where each of the composers will be awarded cash prizes ranging from $6,000 - $18,000, and one finalist will receive an additional $6,000 People’s Choice Award.
The GSC jury will be made up of two Canadian composers, one international composer, a distinguished member of the musical community, an internationally recognized performer, and a member of the concert-going public with a passion for musical creation.
