Thursday, June 1, 2023 10:00to11:00
Raymond Building R2-046, 21111 Lakeshore Road, St Anne de Bellevue, QC, H9X 3V9, CA

Special Seminar with Honorary Degree CandidateÌýDr. Vijay P. Singh,ÌýÌýPh.D., D.Sc., Ph.D. (Hon.), D. Eng. (Hon.), D.Sc. (Hon.), Hon. D. WRE, P.E.,ÌýP.H., Dist. M. ASCE, Dist. Hon. M. IWRA, Hon. M. AWRA, Dist. F. AGGS, NAEÌýDistinguished Professor, Regents ProfessorÌýCaroline & William N. Lehrer Distinguished Chair in Water EngineeringÌýTexas A&M University, College Station, Texas 77843-2117, USA

The current global water situation makes it abundantlyÌýclear that water shortages in many areas of the world areÌýmultiplying; current patterns of use and abuse of water resources
are rising; the water source-to-sea connections are being severelyÌýinterrupted; severe and long droughts are becoming moreÌýfrequent; wetlands are being damaged; the balance betweenÌýfreshwater and saltwater is changing; and freshwater fishÌýpopulations are precipitously declining. These occurrences pointÌýto a global water crisis which is impacting food supply, energyÌýgeneration, environment, ecosystem health, and social andÌýeconomic well-being.

Thus, we ask the question: What is waterÌýsecurity and what systems can we engineer to ensure waterÌýsecurity under the specter of global warming and looming climateÌýchange? How is this security impacted by a burgeoning population,Ìýrising standard of living, growing energy demands, and massiveÌýmigration of people?

To address these questions entails answeringÌýa number of other questions:Ìý What is climate change?Ìý WhyÌýis global warming occurring?Ìý How do the growing population andÌýrising standard of living affect water security?Ìý What is theÌýrelation of water security to food security, energy security, healthÌýsecurity, and ecological security?Ìý Is water security entirely aÌýtechnical problem?Ìý What is the role of engineers in enhancingÌýand maintaining water security?Ìý What systems need to beÌýengineered to help ensure water security?

These and relatedÌýquestions will be dealt with in this presentation.

Finally, aÌýpersonal perspective on water security and engineering solutionsÌýwill be presented.
