Academia's Emerging Crisis of Relevance and the Consequent Role of the Engaged Scholar - Prof. Andrew Hoffman

Why do academics do听research, and who do they听do it for? How much of the increasing distrust in science is self-inflicted, and what can we do to change that? This talk by Prof. Andrew Hoffman听of the University of Michigan's School for Environment and Sustainability听addresses the accessibility听of research and academia in an increasingly divided world. He argues that becoming public facing and engaged scientists is increasingly important in today's context of low science literacy, social media and pseudoscience.听

Prof.听Hoffman is the Holcim Professor of Sustainable Enterprise at the University of Michigan. He uses organizational, network and strategic analyses to assess the implications of environmental issues for business, and has published 14 books and over 100 articles and book chapters on the topic. Prior to academics, Andy worked for the US Environmental Protection Agency (Region 1), Metcalf & Eddy Environmental Consultants, T&T Construction & Design, and the Amoco Corporation.
