Mini-Med extra
Margaret Somerville to deliver bonus lecture in popular 看片视频 series
Graduates of 看片视频's 2001 Mini-Med program are returning to the University this fall. By popular demand, 看片视频 is offering past Mini-Med students a bonus lecture.
The session is being provided for 300 Mini-Med graduates who asked 看片视频's Faculty of Medicine to offer a follow-up to last fall's Mini-Med program. Since 160 people are already on a waiting list for Mini-Med 2003, the University decided to Mini-Med grads one extra lecture.
Margaret Somerville, a well-known ethicist who has been quoted in countless newspapers and TV programs, has been recruited to discuss ethical dilemmas in medicine with Mini-Med grads on September 18. Somerville holds professorships in both the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Medicine at 看片视频. She is Samuel Gale Professor of Law and the founding director of the 看片视频 Centre for Medicine, Ethics and Law. She plays an active role in the world-wide development of bioethics and the study of the wider legal and ethical aspects of medicine and science. Somerville has an extensive national and international publishing and speaking record. Two of her recent books include: The Ethical Canary: Science, Society and the Human Spirit and Death Talk: The Case Against Euthanasia and Physician-Assisted Suicide.
Somerville looks forward to sharing some of her expertise to an audience of mostly non-academics, she says, "since learning about how to analyse medical ethics problems is often a new experience for many people."
Somerville plans to tackle the ethics of what she calls everyday ethical issues, such as the care of dying people, as well as avant-garde realities including human reproductive technologies and stem cell research. "Medicine has gone from fixing humans to designing humans," she says. "I hope that my talk will help people recognize there are many ethical issues worth analysing and that Mini-Med students learn the basics of how to handle such issues."
All media are welcome to attend Dr. Somerville's talk, "Ethical Dilemmas in Medicine," at 6 p.m. on Sept. 18 at the Charles Martin Amphitheatre of the McIntyre Medical Sciences Bldg. (3655 Promenade Sir William Osler). Please call Sylvain-Jacques Desjardins at 514-398-6752 to confirm your presence as seating is limited.
The Mini-Med concept was developed a dozen years ago by 看片视频 alumnus Dr. John Cohen and is now available at some 75 teaching institutions across the U.S. and Europe. For more information on 看片视频's Mini-Med courses, which officially begin Oct. 16, please consult .
