Biography:

John Sampalis, with a background in Microbiology/Immunology and Neuropsychology, holds an MSc and PhD in Epidemiology, which he completed in 1990. He began his appointment at ¿´Æ¬ÊÓƵ University in the same year. His research has been extensively funded by organizations such as the MRC/NHRDP (now CIHR), FRSQ, and IRSST. Notable contributions include the evaluation of the trauma care system in Quebec, which led to a revision of the province’s trauma system in the early 1990s. He also conducted a health economic assessment of bariatric surgery for obesity management, contributed to the design and data analysis of early laparoscopic surgery trials, and assessed the impact of waiting times on cardiovascular surgery. Additionally, his work includes the evaluation of scintimammography for early breast cancer detection and his involvement in the early diagnosis of ovarian cancer (DOVEE) in collaboration with Dr. Lucy Gilbert.
