Evacuation Teams Duties
The following are descriptions of emergency evacuation team duties. The monitors will be called on in the event of a fire or other emergency that would require the swift orderly evacuation of all building occupants to ensure their safety. As a rough guide, each exit leading from a floor area should be provided with an exit monitor and each monitor should have 2 searchers working with him or her.
Building Emergency Warden / Building Director (B.E.W.'s)
The Building Emergency Warden (B.E.W.) will be responsible for maintaining a current list of all monitors and for providing the University Fire Prevention Officer (F.P.O.) with any revisions. The B.E.W. will serve as a contact person for the University Fire Prevention Officer in order to coordinate fire drills, training sessions and testing of fire protection equipment. The B.E.W. will also serve as an on-site contact person during an emergency. All Building Exit Monitors and Exit Monitors should report all emergency related information to the B.E.W. Also, the B.E.W. should maintain a list of important contacts for each building. For example lab supervisors, department heads, individuals who should be notified in the event of an incident or who could be of assistance.
At the sound of the evacuation alarm, proceed to a predesignated area clear of the building and receive updates from the monitors and provide this information to emergency response personnel.
Note: In the event the Building Director is unable to serve as B.E.W. another individual should be appointed.
Floor Searchers / Sweepers (F.S.'s)
-
At the sound of the evacuation alarm, perform a tour of your floor, or assigned portion of your floor, to verify whether people are evacuating. Instruct individuals to leave via the nearest exit.
-
Concentrate on public areas, such as washrooms etc., bearing in mind that office managers, classroom lecturers, and laboratory or workshop heads are responsible for advising occupants in their areas to evacuate.
-
After checking an area close as many doors as possible behind you as you go along.
-
Once your area is clear, advise your E.M. so they may advise the Building Exit Monitor or Building Exit Monitor or B.E.W.
-
With the available monitors, provide aid to those requiring ex. Persons with disabilities or injuries.
-
Leave via the designated evacuation route.
Exit Monitors (E.M.'s)
-
At the sound of the evacuation alarm, proceed to your assigned exit and verify it is usable (free of smoke and obstructions).
-
Direct people to leave via this exit (not elevators) in a calm and orderly fashion.
-
Await the signal from your floor Searcher(s) that the floor area is cleared.
-
With the assistance of your floor Searcher(s) and any other evacuation monitors, provide help to those so requiring ex. Persons with disabilities or injuries.
-
Leave via the designated evacuation route.
-
Once outside your building, report to your Building Exit Monitor or Building Emergency Warden and advise them that your section of the building is clear and advise them of any matters requiring further attention i.e. people trapped or requiring special assistance to evacuate, the location of the fire etc.
Building Exit Monitors (B.E.M.'s)
-
At the sound of the evacuation alarm, proceed to your assigned exterior building exit.
-
As people begin exiting, advise them to move clear of the building in order to make way for others.
-
Take note of the floors (and/or areas) that have been evacuated as the E.M.'s inform you.
-
Prevent people from entering the building until the “all clear” is given and the alarm is silenced.
-
Provide any information you have, regarding which parts of the building have been evacuated as well as where the fire is located, to the Building Emergency Warden or any Emergency Response Personnel present.
Evacuation Team Information Sessions
The Fire Prevention Office conducts introductory and refresher training presentations for Evacuation Team members. Due to the diversity and vast scope of the buildings at ƬƵ, this presentation allows us to inform andeducate individuals specifically to their particular environment, relevant to their responsibilities within their Evacuation Team.
For your reference, a version of this presentation is available below. Feel free to consult these slides as a supplement to the presentations facilitated by an experienced Fire Prevention Officer in your building, as scheduled.
