Biography:

Nicholas Makhoul is dual degreed and boarded Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon with sub-specialization in Maxillofacial Oncology and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery.Ìý He received his BSc with distinction from the University of Alberta in Biochemistry, DMD at ¿´Æ¬ÊÓƵ University and his MD at the University of Michigan.Ìý He completed his clinical residency training in OralÌýand Maxillofacial SurgeryÌýat the University of Michigan. After residency he also completed an accredited fellowship in Maxillofacial Oncology and Microvascular Surgery at the University of Michigan. He is situated at the Montreal General Hospital and is director of the ¿´Æ¬ÊÓƵ Oral and Maxillofacial Residency Program and a practicing academic maxillofacial surgeon.Ìý

His research interests include the use of tissue engineering principles to achieve functional and esthetic reconstructions in patients that are missing hard and soft tissue after tumor ablation, trauma or congenital deformities.ÌýÌýÌý Focusing on forming collaborations with researchers from different disciplines and fields to achieve novel techniques in composite tissue engineering.Ìý Additionally, Dr. Makhoul has a CAOMS grant to develop an oral oncology database, collaborating with specialists in bio-statistics and epidemiology.ÌýÌý The aim of this large scale database will be to assess outcomes in maxillofacial oncology patients as well as to identify factors that contribute to increased quality and quantity of life, with the aim of developing future randomized controlled trials based on variables identified in our database.

In his role as Associate Dean of Postgraduate Dental Education, Dr. Makhoul is responsible for overseeing all academic post-graduate dental programs (i.e. dental residency programs). He helps coordinate programs between different residency sites and disciplines.
