HEALTH DISCIPLINES AND SOCIAL WORK
Six French courses for students in health disciplines and social work are offered at the elementary, intermediate 1, intermediate 2 and advanced levels to help them prepare for their 'stages' and then practice their profession in Quebec.Ìý These courses are funded by the ¿´Æ¬ÊÓƵ Training and Retention of Health Professionals Project, Dialogue ¿´Æ¬ÊÓƵ.Ìý The FRSL courses are 3 credit courses, while FIGF PMCO is a non-credit, tuition-free course.
FRSL 209 FRANÇAIS ORAL ÉLÉMENTAIRE: SSS
3 credits. Fall. Not open to students who have taken FRSL 332-004 prior to Fall 2018.Ìý This course is designed for students from a variety of disciplines (health and social work) to help them interact with clients despite their basic level of French Language skills.Ìý Various communication situations with clients in clinical settings, review of basic linguistic elements - lexical, grammatical and stylistic-used in professional communication.Ìý Acquisition of efficient communication strategies.
​FRSL 210 FRANÇAIS ORAL INTERMÉDIARE 1: SSS
3 credits.Ìý Winter.Ìý Not open to students who have taken FRSL 333-004 prior to Winter 2019.Ìý This course is designed for students from a variety of disciplines (health and social work) to help them interact with clients despite their basic level of French language skills.Ìý Various situations of clinical communication with clients, study of linguistic elements taught at the intermediate 1 level - lexical, grammatical and stylistic-as used in professional communication.Ìý Acquisition of efficient communication strategies. ÌýÌý
FRSL 219 FRANÇAIS INTERMÉDIARE 1: DIÉTÉTIQUE ET NUTRITION
3 credits.Ìý Fall.Ìý Not open to students who have taken FRSL 332-003 prior to Fall 2018.Ìý This course is designed for future dieticians and nutritionists at an intermediate level, but not French speaking, who would like to improve their French oral and written skills while studying specialized vocabulary related to dietetics and nutrition.Ìý This course will help prepare them for practicums or work placements (stages) in French speaking environments as well as for their professional exams.Ìý Topics of discussion, grammar points, exercises and activities focus on developing the necessary French skills for these future professionals to carry out their tasks as dieticians and nutritionists.
FRSL 329 FRANÇAIS ÉCRIT EN CONTEXTE 1: SSS
3 credits.Ìý Fall.Ìý Not open to students who have taken FRSL 332-002 prior to Fall 2018.Ìý To be eligible to practice in Quebec, health and social service professionals must pass an exam administered by the Office québécois de la langue française as well the others required by their professional order.Ìý Written communication in health and social service professions must be clear and precise so that the message can be understood by a different professional reading it at a later date.Ìý Using a dynamic and interactive approach, this French course offers sample texts that provide a variety of discourse styles (informative, narrative, prescriptive, opinion pieces, a variety of styles) in several formats.
FRSL 330 FRANÇAIS ÉCRIT EN CONTEXTE 2: SSS
3 credits.Ìý Winter.Ìý Not open to students who have taken FRSL 333-002 prior to Winter 2019.Ìý To be eligible to practice in Quebec, health and social service professionals must pass an exam administered by the Office québécois de la langue française as well the others required by their professional order.Ìý Written communication in health and social service professions must be clear and precise so that the message can be understood by a different professional reading it at a later date.Ìý Using a dynamic and interactive approach, this French course offers sample texts that provide a variety of discourse styles (informative, narrative, prescriptive, opinion pieces, a variety of styles) in several formats (texts, letters, memos and case reports), this course helps students improve their written communication while reviewing some of the finer grammar points (tense sequencing, pronoun forms, use of verbal modes, etc.)
FIGF PMCO FRANÇAIS ORAL INTERMÉDIAIRE 2 ET AVANCÉ: SSS
No credits.Ìý No fees. Winter.Ìý Summer (May).Ìý Oral communication practice in the form of exercises, discussions and role-play, with an emphasis on specialized vocabulary and useful sentence structures.Ìý Oral comprehension will be enhanced by regular viewing of videos as well as during discussions and simulations of professional-client situations.Ìý The course pack is distributed free of charge.
FIGF PMCE FRANÇAIS ÉCRIT INTERMÉDIAIRE 2 ET AVANCÉ:Ìý SSS
No credits.Ìý No fees.Ìý Summer (May).Ìý This course helps students whose written French skills are not as fluent as their oral skills.Ìý They will improve their ability to choose correct grammar and linguistic terms.Ìý After studying model texts, students will write similar ones using appropriate sentence structure and vocabulary in preparation for written communication with professional colleagues as well as to the French exam administered by l'Office québécois de la langue française.Ìý Each of the five model texts offers useful examples of grammar, syntax and vocabulary.Ìý The course pack is distributed free of charge.
