Admission Requirements
Admission requirements include, normally, an MA degree in history and a BA degree in history with a minimum CGPA of 3.3. Applicants for a Ph.D. in Ancient History must have reading proficiency in Greek and Latin plus one modern European language (in addition to their first language). Applicants for other areas of history, e.g., Russian, should also have a reading knowledge of languages needed for research purposes.
Admission is competitive. Refer to the list of faculty members for geographic, chronological, and thematic specialization areas to find professors who might be available to supervise comprehensive examinations and theses. Professors on leave will not be able to supervise comprehensive examinations. You should contact prospective Ph.D. supervisors before you submit an application to find out if the potential supervisor will be on leave, is accepting new students, and is willing to supervise the topic should you be admitted.
In exceptional circumstances, students whom the graduate admissions committee determines have an insufficient background in history may be admitted to Ph.D. 1. This requires a year of coursework before preparation for the comprehensive exams can begin.
