Note: Requests for readmission following Unsatisfactory Standing not related to a Field Placement are normally addressed by the Director of Internships and Student Affairs
The guidelines presented below are designed to make procedures for readmission of a teacher candidate in unsatisfactory standing following a failure in a field experience/internship transparent and efficient for all parties. Requests for readmission of a teacher candidate in unsatisfactory standing following a failure in a field experience/internship are normally addressed by the Internships and Student Affairs Director. In exceptional cases, a request for readmission may be initially heard by the Student Affairs Committee.
Preamble: In order to be considered for readmission following failure in a field experience, the teacher candidate must be absent from the program for a period of one full calendar year to be eligible for readmission. In addition to completing a request through Minerva, a teacher candidate in Unsatisfactory Standing following receipt of a grade of ‘F’ in a in a field experience/internship courseshould:
- Send their request for readmission by email to isa.education [at] mcgill.ca with the following information in the subject line: ReadmissionRequest_Firstname_Lastname_ƬƵID
- Address the readmission request to the Internships & Student Affairs Director.
- Provide a one-page personal statement that provides clear and compelling reasons for their readmission and that clearly addresses the following questions:
- What have you been doing since you left ƬƵ?
- What concrete steps have you taken to address the issues that lead to your unsatisfactory Field Experience outcome?
- Why are you now better prepared to be successful in a teacher education program?
- Include one letter of reference supporting the claims made in the personal statement. Ideally, the letter of reference should be submitted by someone while first-hand knowledge of the efforts made by the teacher candidate to warrant readmission.
- Optional: Include supporting documents (e.g. evidence of work completed as specified in the outcome letter sent by the ISA Director, etc.)
- The ISA Director renders a decision:
- student is readmitted;
- readmission application is denied:
If a teacher candidate wishes to appeal the decision of the ISA Director, they can make a request for an in-person appeal for readmission to Faculty of Education Student Affairs Committee (SAC)
Please note that any appeal will not be considered without complete documentation at the time of the request.
Any requests to add supplemental material not included in the original request will be considered up to 14 days before the SAC meeting date. SAC meetings are scheduled twice in the fall term, twice in the Winter term and once in the summer term.
