B.Eng. (Bioresource) | Major in Bioresource Engineering

A student in the bioresource engineering shop uses a machineAs the world鈥檚 population grows, so does our need for food, renewable energy, and biomaterials. In this program, you鈥檒l learn how to connect natural sciences and engineering design to optimize our use of biological resources while protecting the environment.

Your courses will include lectures, problem-solving sessions, hands-on labs, and other experiential learning activities. In some courses, you鈥檒l visit relevant industrial sites. Most of your courses will be offered on 看片视频 University's听Macdonald Campus, but at least one semester of courses will be taken on the Downtown Campus.

This is a professional engineering program, fully accredited by Engineers Canada as satisfying the academic requirements for registration in the Ordre des ing茅nieurs du Qu茅bec (OIQ), as well as Canadian, American and many international engineering associations.

Your courses

In the听Bachelor of Engineering (Bioresource)听program,听you鈥檒l follow a core set of engineering courses (62 credits), as well as 51 credits of complementary engineering, natural science, and social sciences classes, which you can choose based on your interests. Students can also enroll in an Honours program and pursue several minors.

Streams

In the Bioresource Engineering program, you can choose to follow one of three streams:

Bio-Environmental Engineering

Focus on knowledge of soil and water engineering, ecological engineering, organic waste management, and related topics essential for humanity鈥檚 sustainable development, resilience to climate change, and other contemporary challenges.

Bio-Process Engineering

Apply engineering skills to design nature-inspired infrastructure for transforming agricultural and other natural resources into products such as food, fiber, biofuel, biomaterials, and sustainable composites.

Bio-Production Engineering (with Professional Agrology option)

Complementing the legacy of the agricultural engineering profession, this stream explores new realities of smart farming, controlled production systems, and emerging bio-production processes.

A Professional Agrology Option is available for students interested in obtaining agrology licensing through the Ordre des Agronomes du Qu茅bec (OAQ) [Order of Agrologists of Quebec].

Membership in the OAQ is also possible through the B.Sc. (Ag.Env.Sc.) program with an听Agricultural Economics听辞谤 Agricultural Economicsmajor.


Career paths

Graduates of our Bioresource Engineering program can obtain professional engineering (PEng) licensing in all Canadian provinces. As a licensed PEng, you can pursue a career in many areas, including:

  • Biofuel and bioenergy engineering
  • Ecological and environmental engineering
  • Food process engineering
  • Machinery design
  • Organic waste management engineering
  • Post-harvest technologies
  • Water resource management engineering

Internships & research

Following your study plan, you can gain essential hands-on experience through undergraduate research and internships, as well as clubs. Our students have been:

  • Working for the UN Food Program
  • Interning on urban rooftop farms in Washington, DC
  • Joining Engineers Without Borders projects in rural Africa
  • Developing new soil moisture sensors and bee smokers
  • Integrating food production systems with the Canadian Space Agency
  • Working on agricultural robotics design

A听Bachelor's degree听is an undergraduate degree that normally takes 3 to 4 full-time years of study to complete, depending on the student鈥檚 previous education system.

If you are applying from high school (outside of Quebec's CEGEP system), you cannot apply directly to this major. You must apply to the associated听Freshman/Foundation Year听program.
