Refugees and Forced Migration

Recent years have seen profound changes in the situation of refugees and displaced peoples. While the numbers of people enduring forced migration have increased, receiving countries have become less hospitable. Anxieties about security and integration have been used to justify more restrictive policies and harsh treatment of people seeking asylum. This conference will examine mental health issues for asylum seekers, refugees and internally displaced peoples. Presentations will examine: the implications for mental health of international policies and practices on refugees and migration; the impact of different ideologies of citizenship, ethnocultural identity and modes of social integration on individual and collective well-being; models of mental health services for refugees; and clinical strategies in working with refugees, across the lifespan. There will be a poster session for participants who wish to present research studies or intervention programs.
