The timeline below describes a typical program timeline for graduate students in the Experimental psychology track.

The First Year

Students entering the program with a Master's degree must complete the courses in Psychological Theory (PSYC 660) and Statistics (PSYC 650, PSYC 651). Exemptions may be granted if equivalent courses have already been completed.听

The Second Year


PSYC 690 Masters Research 1 15 Credits

PSYC 699 Masters Research 2 12 Credits

In the second year of study, students register for MA/MSc2 and continue to work on their research. In April of the second year in the program, students typically either submit a Masters Thesis or a fast track paper. Research described in a Master鈥檚 Thesis cannot be part of a future PhD Thesis, however research described in a fast-track paper can count towards a student's future PhD Thesis.听

The Third Year


In the third year, students usually enroll in the PhD Program (PhD2), continue working on their research, and begin taking the required area seminars.

The Fourth Year and Beyond


PSYC 701 Doctoral Comprehensive Exam
    Offered in the:
  • Fall
  • Winter
  • Summer

In the fourth year (PhD3), students are expected to schedule the Special Comprehensive Examination (PSYC 701).

PhD candidates must complete at least three years of resident study. Most students complete the program within 5-6 years.
