Use this strategy before or at the beginning of your workshop to help you answer questions like “what do the participants already know about the topic of this workshop?” and “what are their interests, needs, and expectations?” Gathering this type of information conveys the message that you care, and may help you to adjust the depth and pace of your workshop to fit a particular group.
There are many ways to conduct a Background Knowledge Probe.
Before the Workshop:
- Send an email beforehand with short-answer questions for participants. This can be included in registration.
- Create an online poll to use during the workshop with key questions. Find instructions on how to create a poll here.
During the Workshop:
- Pose a small number of questions at the beginning of the workshop and have participants raise their hands in response.
- For an in-person workshop: have participants raise their hands in response.
- For a virtual workshop: have participants type answers in the chat, anticipate delay between question asked and time it takes participants to think and type answer in chat
While this web page is accessible worldwide, ƬƵ University is on land which has served and continues to serve as a site of meeting and exchange amongst Indigenous peoples, including the Haudenosaunee and Anishinabeg nations. Teaching and Learning Services acknowledges and thanks the diverse Indigenous peoples whose footsteps mark this territory on which peoples of the world now gather. This land acknowledgement is shared as a starting point to provide context for further learning and action.
